Softball season is officially in full swing, and Rock Creek High School is stepping up to the plate with big energy! With the sun finally shining and spirits high, fans are sliding into the stands, ready to catch every thrilling moment of Rock Creek softball.
This year is especially significant for the Mustangs, as it marks their first season in the North Central Kansas League. The move means they will face more competitive teams—many of which they may encounter again in the state tournament.
Chloe Purvis, a senior softball player, is looking forward to making it back to state for the fifth year in a row.
“It’ll be tougher this year though. We’re moving to the NCKL this year, so we’re playing tougher teams, moving away from the Mideast League” Purvis said.
Reese Grady, a junior on the softball team, said the players are hungry for another shot at hosting regionals, which is something they pulled off last season and are determined to repeat.
“One of the things we are working towards is hosting regionals,” Grady said “which means we have to be one of the top four in the East Regional.”
Jeri Brummett, who has served as the head coach of the Rock Creek softball team for 26 years, is striving for the team to compete at its highest level, win a state title and secure a top-three national ranking for team academics this season. These goals are united under a central theme.
“The theme for this year is ‘better together’ so it’s also a priority to be steadfast teammates and unified in what we do” Brummett said.
While the competition may be tougher this season, the team’s standards of excellence remain firmly in place. Expectations for the Mustangs always remain high.
“You should expect disciplined play, hard work and passion for the sport from this team,” Brummett said “We play Rock Creek style ball and that will not change as long as I have a say. We compete and we enjoy the game and one another”.
