The Rock Creek Board of Education opened its meeting with gratitude and appreciation for the school’s continued growth, giving a special shoutout to the journalism class for its ongoing project and partnerships. Among the highlights was the discussion of their current process of creating of 52 training videos for Midland Exteriors.
Rock Creek High School hosted its prom on April 12, embracing a Hollywood movie theme. The event was a major success, with approximately 200 attendees participating in both prom and after-prom activities. A large crowd also turned out for the promenade, cheering on family, classmates, and friends as they walked down the red carpet.
Choir’s regional solo and ensemble had a strong showing at their competition, at Manhattan High School recently. Entering 49 performances and earning 27 one ratings. Additionally, Janie Brokenicky was recently nominated for the Kansas Teacher of the Year Award, though she was not selected as a finalist.
In performing arts news, the 2025 Jester Awards announced 22 Rock Creek student nominations. Several teachers also received recognition at both regional and state levels for their contributions, including for the recent musical production, Belle.
Looking ahead, Rock Creek will introduce a new nursing program in partnership with Wichita State University beginning next fall. The program will give students hands-on experience in the nursing field through job shadowing and will offer the opportunity to earn college credit.
As the Rock Creek community continues to grow, school leaders are exploring ways to support students across all grade levels. Beginning next academic year, BOE members will participate in a new training program through Greenbush to help implement a long-term development plan.
The Kansas State Department of Education has recently updated its guidelines for state testing accommodations. Previously, students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) could receive accommodations directly through the Kite Portal. Under the new policy, each student must now go through a screening process to qualify.
The State Department of Education has recently updated their guidelines for state testing. Previously, students with and Individual Education Plan (IEP), the test proctor was able to go to the Kite portal and change the setting so the students would have that as part of their testing accommodation. Despite the changes, Rock Creek has chosen to maintain its current approach to IEP testing. This decision will allow the school to continue tracking IEP students’ progress without negatively impacting individual scores. However, it may affect the school’s overall participation score.
The next board of education meeting will be held on May 12, 2025 at the district office building.
