With a quick wit, boundless energy, and a heart for helping others, Gavin Smith has become a familiar and beloved presence on the Rock Creek High School stage. Now a senior, he’s preparing to step into a bigger spotlight pursuing a career in acting after graduation.
Gavin Smith began his theater journey as a sophomore at Rock Creek High School. Since then, he has performed in three musicals, taking on a variety of roles that showcased both his comedic timing and dedication to the craft.
Janie Brokenicky, choir teacher at Rock Creek and director of the school’s musicals, has worked closely with Smith and many other students that have gone on to pursue a career in theatre.
“A lot of it for theatre is less about the name of the university and more about the directors and the people you work with,” Brokenicky said.
Smith’s impact goes beyond the stage. Known for his positive attitude and willingness to help others, he has earned the respect of his peers and teachers alike.
“Gavin’s a good leader, especially backstage. He’s always making sure people are doing the right thing,” said senior Averi Foster, a fellow musical cast member and friend.
Foster describes Smith as someone who brings joy and energy to rehearsals and performances alike.
“He makes the plays and musicals more fun. He’s very energetic and playful,” Foster said.
Over the years, Smith has taken on a variety of characters from playing the Grinch to portraying a French candlestick. In his most recent role, he stepped into the shoes of a sarcastic comedian, showing off his versatility as an actor.
“Seeing him take different kinds of roles and make them his own has been a joy,” Brokenicky said.
Beyond the characters he’s played, Smith values the connections he’s made through theater. From cast bonding to learning lines together, the friendships built during long rehearsals have made a lasting impact.
“I’ve met a lot of people in the three musicals I’ve played in,” Smith said. “I’ll remember my roles and friends for years to come.”
As he looks ahead to college and a future on stage, Smith remains grounded in what brought him to theater in the first place: a love for performance and the people who make it all happen.
