When you walk in the doors at Rock Creek High School you are greeted by the delicious smell of popcorn and shining, smiling faces. The bright, colorful balloons create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. This year’s fall musical was “Seussical the Musical” put on by Rock Creek High School students and directed by Jaine Brokenicky.
Mrs. Brokenicky shares why she chose “Seussical” as this year’s fall musical, “When selecting a show, I first look at who my upperclassmen will be and try to find shows that will match their abilities and vocal styles. I knew I could fill all the major roles in “Seussical”; plus, I’ve directed the show before so knew it well on top of that”.
Carlee Trent, a 6th grader at Rock Creek Middle School, was selected by Mrs. Brokenicky to play the role “JoJo” the mayor’s son in this year’s fall musical. According to Trent, “Working with the high schoolers has been amazing. Some of them are very funny and some of them can work really hard. I think that they have become my family because they are just amazing. And they encourage me and they encourage everyone else around them”.
Jonas Smith, one of the leads in this year’s musical, shares his experience, “I think it’s very exciting. This is obviously my first show here, it’s my seventh show I’ve done and it’s just great to be this character because it’s my personality just turned up to 11. It’s a very fun character and I’m really happy to be here and have this growth”.
Abigail Kottke, a freshman in this year’s fall musical, shares about her positive experience saying, “The cast has been positive because they’re always making me feel good about my singing and not tearing me down on that”.
Joee Perkins, who played the alto saxophone, flute, and piccolo in the pitt for the fall musical this year, was also interviewed. Perkins was asked how the musical pit is different from the school’s marching band, “The music is a lot more. There are a lot more notes that I definitely have not learned. So it’s kind of just a new experience”.
Seussical offered many new opportunities and experiences to this year’s Rock Creek High School musical cast. With a growing school, the cast and crew tripled in size from last year, and everyone involved is excited to see the program grow even further.
