After the previous musical, Seussical finished its performances, upperclassmen wanted to create another production. Mrs. Brokenicky, the musical director, decided she could make their request work. While a new production has its pros, there’s another factor to putting this musical on. Because Seussical used quite a bit of funding, the new musical will not be funded by the school. Independent efforts will be needed to pull everything together, but many see a great outcome ahead.
Full licensing for the musical “1940’s Radio Hour” has just been approved and sent to the music department. “1940’s Radio Hour” dives into a New York radio station and show, designed for American soldiers overseas, during World War 2. Performers try to keep calamity low, but many challenges arise. This musical pulls the audience into the 1940’s, with many different music types and live sound effects. There are characters who range from being bubble-headed to sophisticated, and an on-stage pit who act along with playing their instrument.
For general productions at Rock Creek, actors have around 8 weeks to perfect their performance. For this musical, however, actors will have only around 4 weeks. With the first practice being on December 11, this production will have a quick turnaround. Fortunately, there are only 13 characters, which guarantees focused and dedicated actors. Most “rehearsals” will be independently over Christmas break, and then blocking and final touches will occur after Christmas. Performances are scheduled to be around the end of January, to the beginning of February.
Although it’s an unexpected production for the school, lots are excited for the musical to be put on. “1940’s Radio Hour” is a good choice for a smaller cast, allowing production preparation to be quicker. Get ready to buy your tickets for this show, because it’s going to be fun-packed, chaotic, and an adventure to New York in the 40’s.
