It takes courage to be in front of the camera. It takes skill to be behind the camera. Sophomore, Dylan Nelson has both. Nelson is a sophomore at Rock Creek High School.
Nelson is a member of the Rock Creek Cross Country and track team and a key contributor to RCTV, the student-run broadcasting program at the school.
“I enjoy the fact that we actually get to do it,” Nelson said, explaining what he enjoys most about broadcasting. He’s always eager to help, both in the studio and outside it.
“He is very willing to do every single task that there is to do,” said Nathan Bortnick, a sophomore and fellow team member.
The 2024-2025 school year has been the first year Rock Creek has offered a broadcast class, and the program is still growing. Nelson is excited to be part of it.
“Not a lot of other schools have the same options that we do, like for broadcast this, this setup,” Nelson said.
When he’s not in the studio or helping run RCTV, Nelson is running for the cross-country and track teams. Despite being only a sophomore, he has emerged as a leader, inspiring others just as his mom inspired him to take up running.
“My mom, she used to be a cross country runner when she was in high school” said Nelson “I was like, hmm, that might be a good idea for me to do since I found out that I was good at running when I was a lot younger.”
Nelson is known for his mix of discipline and humor. He knows when to be serious and when to lighten the mood.
“When you need it to be serious, he will be flat out serious,” freshman Timothy Redetzke said, “And if you’re just hanging out or just chilling near him, he’ll make sure everybody’s laughing.”
Whether leading a team or encouraging his peers, determination, humor, and support are at the heart of Nelson’s approach.
“He would support me as I cross across the finish line,” Bortnick said.
