Agriculture and National FFA organization, previously known as Future Farmers of America, has impacted the lives of not only the students involved but also the community. Giving students a hands-on opportunity to experiment with a variety of skills; from cattle judging to helping with Barn Yard Day, every member can find a place in the organization.
Ag teacher and FFA adviser, David Holliday was inspired by his own agriculture teacher and his father. His interests come from not only his background, but his passion for people as well. However, Holliday has noticed the constant changes in agriculture, and the needs for students to adapt to the new technology.
“AG keeps changing. And so because AG changes, the basics stay the same, but then you have to adapt and change to the new technology,” Holliday said.
Senior Mason Owens was influenced by friends and family to join FFA. The organization has helped Owens to learn skills such as judging animals. Not only that, but he has grown out of his comfort zone to make connections with new people.
“Going to all the events and making good friendships. And meeting new people,” Owens said.
Persuaded by livestock and her older brother’s involvement, Rylinn Gerber has grown to love the FFA tours and events that FFA has put together. Gerber encourages those who are interested in the club to join for not only the skills you learn, but also because of the memories you gain.
“You make a lot of new friends, and you have a lot of opportunities to find out more about FFA,” Gerber said.
Senior Emma Ross originally joined FFA and other AG classes because of her heart for animals. Although Ross has enjoyed making memories with her peers, there are still struggles that come with FFA.
“I don’t like public speaking… [but now I’m] more confident in speaking to a group of people,” Ross said.
Holliday noted that one of the major benefits agriculture gives is the hands-on opportunities, and how big the organization is.
“A lot of our students are more hands on… [and] it’s such a big organization. And I really do believe that there’s an opportunity for everybody in FFA,” Holliday said.
