Here at Rock Creek all athletics are valued. Just recently a new sport was added; boys and girls golf, which may leave room for more sports to come. Soccer is just one of the many sports students hope that the Rock Creek community will consider.
Since several students already participate in intramural leagues or area club soccer teams, the addition of a school-sanctioned team could be a natural next step.
“[I have] practice on Wednesdays right now,’’ said 6th grader Landon McCoy, “typically we have practice 8:30-9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but that’s during the season.”
McCoy has been playing soccer for nine to 10 years and enjoys the competitive nature of the sport. He noted that many of his friends play for both Manhattan High School and a club team Surf. Students from Manhattan seem to find it easier to join club teams, while those from Rock Creek are often more hesitant.
“It’d be easier for me to go to practice at Rock Creek than the indoor facility,” said freshman Jaxon Kirby, “which is located on the complete opposite side of Manhattan.”
Kirby has been playing soccer for about 9 years and loves his current team. However, when asked if he’d try out for a Rock Creek soccer team, he said he would try-out and that he would fully support a soccer team at Rock Creek. The convenience of a nearby practice location, especially in the evenings, would be a major benefit.
As more students express interest and share their experiences, their hope is that the growing community of Rock Creek sees the benefits of adding this sport and they move closer to making soccer its next big goal.
