The new freshmen share their challenges and involvement so far at Rock Creek High School.
Madison Burenheide is a freshman at Rock Creek High School who is involved in FFA and wrestling. Burenheide is excited for more of the high school experiences, such as homecoming and wrestling season. Although she was nervous for high school, the expectation compared to reality was different than what she thought it would be.
“I thought it was gonna be really strict and very confusing with my classes, and it was gonna be really hard. But it ended up being easier than I thought,” Burenheide said.
Uriah Purnell, who is involved in track, described how his outlook on school has shifted since middle school. Purnell admitted that his middle school years did not involve as much effort, but now he sees the importance of working harder.
“Being more organized. I didn’t study as much in middle school because I didn’t care, but I definitely care more this year,” Purnell said.
Jaeleigh Schreck is a freshman involved in wrestling and golf who has been able to make friends, try high school sports, and try new clubs with her friends. However, she expresses concerns about wrestling and how it will be different than middle school.
“It’s gonna be really different. In middle school it was more chill, laid back, but in high school it’s more intense and scary,” Schreck said.
Staff has also witnessed the early efforts of the freshman class, Jim Johnston, the health and PE teacher has also noticed positive qualities in this year’s freshman. He highlighted the way students showed maturity during a recent class meeting.
“Almost all of them were very respectful. When we had our freshman class meeting and the freshman officer candidates spoke, they all listened very well,” Johnston said.
