The Rock Creek High School boys basketball team is making noise this winter, turning hard work, discipline, and strong chemistry into one of the most exciting seasons the program has seen in recent years. As of February 11, the Mustangs have brought home the gold eighteen times in a row, building an impressive winning streak that reflects not only talent on the court, but a culture of commitment and trust developed behind the scenes.
At the center of that culture is head coach Justin Smith, whose approach to the game goes far beyond wins and losses. Smith has made player development the foundation of the program, believing that long-term growth ultimately leads to success on the scoreboard.
“If you develop players the way that you want to develop them, then winning games is going to take care of yourself,” Smith said.
That philosophy has become the backbone of the team, shaping practices, expectations, and the mindset of each player who steps onto the court. Rather than focusing solely on the current season, the program emphasizes improvement, accountability, and confidence. Values that players carry into every game.
For Rock Creek senior Peter Martinie, the objective is clear and rooted in unfinished business.
“Make it back to state,” Martinie said.
That same goal drives Smith’s younger players as well, including junior Logan Klingenburg, who is focused on continuing to grow and returning to the state tournament. Reflecting on his progress since his freshman year, Klingenburg noted how increased confidence has changed his game.
“I feel like I’ve gained a lot more confidence, and I’ve grown, like quite a bit, so it’s been a lot easier,” Klingenburg said.
While individual growth has played a key role in the Mustangs’ success, the team believes its strongest advantage lies in the bond shared off the court. When asking any player about the team chemistry, they all shared the same response:
“We are a big family,” Smith said.
