A recent law (House Bill 2299) also known as the bell-to-bell mandate was passed that prohibits students from using or accessing personal electronics on March 19, 2026. This law will affect all students and faculty attending Rock Creek starting in the 2026-2027 school year.
Many disagree with the recent law that will be banning the use of phones in school, even a senior Ezra Spiller, graduating this year that will not be in school for the change, has concerns about in the event of an emergency that he sees phones being beneficial.
“Just in case of an emergency or something they can easily call a parent or something like that it’s easy access,” Spiller said.
Besides Spillers outlook on the safety aspect of the phone ban, Another concern about the phone ban by junior Shevy Brock would be the classrooms that are Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes that actually utilizes their phone while fulfilling assignments.
“I definitely feel like the biggest downside is for journalism students…we use our phones a lot for interviews, and we use our phones for a lot of other things just to kind of get information from, like even on social media and stuff, and especially not being able to have that as a tool for this class, I feel it’ll be a problem,” Brock said.
Even some teachers have predicted challenges that certain classes will experience. The CTE coordinator, Jessica Roche shares what may happen to specific classes in the program.
“I think there are some particular pathways that will be impacted, such as marketing, finance and our journalism pathway, because I think they use outside of school technology the most,” Roche said.
Even with the challenges in the classroom with technology there is one major positive to this ban.
“…I don’t think kids understand how it’s impacted them so much, and so I think having the phone ban will regulate some of the emotional connections that kids have with phones that are maybe potentially unhealthy and I think just less exposure to social media will benefit students,” Roche said.
