From Louisiana all the way to St. George, Kansas, new junior student Tristyn Broussard has joined the Rock Creek School District. Moving across states can be a big change, and for Tristyn, that means adjusting not only to a new community but also to a new school environment. Tristyn’s family moved here to allow his dad to work on the railroad.
Tristyn is able to share his view about his transition to Rock Creek, by explaining what differences he’s noticed between his old school and his new one. Tristyn has 2 sisters, Kenadie (11th grader) and Paisley (6th grader) Broussard, who are also new to the district.
When Tristyn first arrived at Rock Creek after the long summer he not only had to adjust to a new school but getting back on a routine.
“Still trying to fix my sleeping schedule, that’s the main part,” Tristyn Broussard said.
Despite the challenge of getting back into a routine, there are a few classes he is taking like journalism that he has never taken before and it is completely new to him. However he’s eager to dive into a few more familiar classes this year.
“Health, English and science,” Tristyn Broussard said.
Coming from a different school system, Tristyn said one of the biggest changes has been the way the things are laid out here at Rock Creek.
“How the classes are aligned and stuff, all the hallways [compared to here it] is just one,” Tristyn Broussard said.
While Tristan focuses on getting used to the building and schedule, his sister Kenadie has been working through her own adjustments. She agreed that returning to a school schedule can be a big shift, especially after a summer of different routines.
“…it’s like a big adjustment, because I’m used to waking up earlier, but now we are waking up later,” Kenadie Broussard said.
Kenadie used to start her mornings early, often waking up at 5 a.m. to run before school. Running isn’t her only passion, though, she also enjoys sports and creative pursuits.
“I like to play volleyball…run, and I’m pretty big art based,” Kenadie Broussard said.
As a junior, Kenadie has already learned a few lessons that she’s eager to share with younger students who may be just starting out in high school.
“…know what you’re doing before you come to high school, or you’re gonna struggle, like figuring out how you want to spend the rest of your life,” Kenadie Broussard said.
Although she’s only been at Rock Creek for a short time, Kenadie said she already feels welcomed by both her teachers and her classmates.
“There’s a lot more class opportunities… I like it here. Like, people don’t judge based on what you look like,” Kenadie Broussard said
Kenadie Broussard’s positive attitude and openness to new experiences are helping make a smooth transition into the Mustang community. Both Kenadie and Tristyn are looking forward to getting involved and learning more about what all Rock Creek has to offer.
Moving to a new school district can be intimidating, but Tristyn and Kenadie Broussard are approaching it with enthusiasm and optimism. With time, effort and a welcoming Rock Creek community, they’re sure to feel right at home at The Rock.
