Handling the big bucks and waving the big flags, that is where you will find Olivia Bowman hard at work and being a driven student. A four-year member of Rock Creek High School’s journalism program, Bowman has built a reputation for leadership both on and off the page.
In addition to serving as yearbook business manager, she participates in forensic, band, made the team for the school’s first-ever flag team, and is on the board for Every Mustang Matters, leaving a lasting impact on student media and school spirit during her time as a Mustang.
Within the yearbook program, Bowman takes on a leadership role that requires organization and communication.
“My role is the business manager,” Bowman said. “ I deal with all the ads in the back of the yearbook. I call and ask them what they want.”
As business manager, Bowman works closely with students, teachers, business owners and parents to ensure advertisements are accurate and professional.
“Right now she is communicating back and forth with parents, who are wanting to buy senior ads, and trying to make sure that the ad looks the way they want it to,” journalism teacher, Shana Schmidt said.
Despite a full class schedule, Bowman continues to prioritize the journalism courses she enjoys most.
“Ive taken almost all of them [journalism classes], except broadcast. I think the yearbook is my favorite, definitely because I’ve been in it the longest,” Bowman said.
Bowman’s work ethic has not gone unnoticed by her peers. Senior Jackson McCann, a fellow leader in the Mustang Rewind podcast class, sees her impact firsthand.
“ She’s definitely someone who looks for the most effective but still the most fun way to do something,” McCann said. “ She is a persistent, persevering, and just a down to earth person when it comes to working.”
Beyond leadership, Bowman has built strong relationships within the journalism program which is like family.
“Olivia is one of the kindest people I know, she’s always very funny, she makes me laugh a lot, and we get along too,” McCann said. “ She really became this person I can depend on and someone I know will have my back.”
