Chick-fil-a Leadership has announced a schoolwide food drive running Feb. 2–6, with all donations going directly to local blessing boxes to support families in need. Advisor classes will compete to collect the most food items, with the winning advisor class earning a Chick-fil-a meal. While the incentive adds excitement; the true prize is helping to address food insecurity in the local community.
Food insecurity affects a significant number of students locally and across the state. One in five children in Kansas faces food insecurity, according to Feeding America’s statement on the U.S. Department of Agriculture report, and nearly 49% of Kansas students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches, according to the Kansas Department of Education. For many students, school meals provide their most reliable access to food.
The issue extends beyond Kansas. More than 14 million children in the United States experience food insecurity, according to reports from the USDA. These numbers highlight the ongoing need for community-based support systems, such as food drives and blessing boxes.
Helping does not require a large donation. Even a single can of food can help provide for families in need, one donated item can represent stability, relief, and hope.
The Chick-fil-a leadership is encouraging everyone who can help to participate.
