On May 2nd, the Rock Creek forensics team traveled to the state championship tournament held at Washburn Rural High School. The team won second place out of 30 schools.
The results were far from guaranteed. Several team members were suffering from a spring cold that made it unsure if they would even make the trip to Topeka. The day before the tournament, when asked how he was feeling, Isaiah Cazee said, “Oh, ok. My throat feels like someone is going over it with a rake.” His acting partner, Luke Ruhnke, was also under the weather.
It didn’t seem to matter, though, as the two won both the duet acting and the improvised duet acting events. Rock Creek had other medal winners. Jackson McCann won the humorous solo acting event, and Jackson also teamed up with Briana Linville to win fifth place in duet acting. Zane Dubiel won fourth in informative and fifth in oration. Freshman Cadence Jacques and Lidia Honeywell also brought home medals, with Cadence winning fourth in humorous solo acting, and Lidia winning fifth.
Making semi-finals were Frankie Webster in impromptu speaking, Devin Fleming in extemporaneous speaking, and the duo of Halle Reitz and Owen Miller in improvised duet acting. Also winning points for the team trophy were Piper Allen in humorous solo, Halle & Owen in duet acting, Elliana Kufahl in oration, Frankie Webster in oration, and Delilah Hunter in POI. It was Rock Creek’s 16th state forensics trophy.
Rock Creek also sent a group of students to Salina South High School for the state festival tournament. Out of eleven entries, eight came home with “I” ratings. Those students earning “I” rating includes Adam Brockish in both extemporaneous speaking and impromptu speaking; Abby McCracken and Braden Miller in duet acting; Zoey Crowder in humorous solo; Evan Buckman in poetry; Uriah Purnell in prose; Olivia Bowman in serious solo acting; Kaylee Liby and Skyler O’Brien in duet acting and finally, Skyler in informative speaking. Two other entries earned “II” ratings: Emmie Madden in impromptu speaking and the improvised duet duo of Abby and Zoey.
